Chemicals leaking into our water for Decades

It has come to our attention about another incident involving our drinking water, the British Oxygen Company, responsible for dumping tarry waste all over Co Derry including 10 sites in Lettershandoney that are now being investigated due to the high number of neurological conditions in the area have a site in Derry. The indecent in question is at the DuPont site where a pond dating back to the 70s was used to dump chemicals before any waste disposal licence was required, the pond has been leaking into the faughan for decades, 60% of our drinking water comes from the river which is why this is so concerning.

DuPont has applied to the council to have the site decontaminated, the plan points out how the pond became the focus of site investigations “due to elevated Ethylene Dichloride concentrations in groundwater and sporadic Ethylene Dichloride concentrations in the adjacent River Faughan greater than the Environmental Quality Standard (EQS)”.

Why are there so many points along the river that can be a source of contamination to our water we need to put stronger protections in place to stop any potential disaster, it seems like profit is more important than the people and we must demand better.
