People of Derry, a grave injustice has been served on ALL of us, by a small group of greedy, selfish, individuals. Our water has been turned toxic by decades of illegal dumping in a vast area of land, only yards from our only source of drinking water, the River Faughan.
Yesterday, at the Guildhall, the authorities who are responsible for protecting ALL of us, were back yet again, to do another presentation for Council, which consisted of playing things down, corporate speak, and well, superficial bullshit really.
Councillors listened as Northern Ireland Water and NI Environmental Authority poured over slides which were barely visible and really only supplied the reps with the correct format for deception.
As the drone footage was being played over Mad Max' tomb at Mobuoy dump, one of the activists got very disturbed and troubled at the proximity of the toxic ponds to the River, and stood up exclaiming 'shame shame', and troubled by the possibility of our public reps being duped by these corporate puppets, he proceeded to present a few truths, together with advice for all present to watch the movie, Dark Waters, a new film, currently in some cinemas, exposing the devastation left behind by Du Pont at its plants all over the world.
Folks, this is only a fraction of what we are concerned about, as there are many companies and individuals responsible for turning our water toxic, and the authorities cannot be allowed ANY room for manoeuvre from here on in, we need to be building pressure now, to follow the achievements of those in the public gallery yesterday, where it was clear that WE do have a voice, and WE can achieve big things when WE shout loud enough.
Councillor Tierney halted proceedings yesterday, due to the disruption from the public gallery, and what ensued was a clamber from councillors wanting to know more (a simple Google search from someone with a bit of interest in their constituents drinking toxic water would have answered a lot, however, they will be interested now, they had better be), some councillors asked those in the public gallery for questions they wanted asked, and duly obliged, even though none were adequately answered.
When council restarted each councillor asked pressing questions, virtually all went unanswered, however Councillor McCready announced that all questions which were asked, together with those provided from the public gallery, should be ready in writing for the next meeting. The generation of passion at the desire for the truth produced an outcome, which otherwise probably would not have happened.
The Council Committee unanimously agreed that they would be demanding that Stormont now deliver on their decision in 2014 to set up and fund a public inquiry into Mobuoy dump, and we believe this should include the many other dumps in the area.
There was also agreement that there would be a monthly meeting on Mobuoy dump, something which should now be used as a platform for an awareness and action campaign around this life or death issue for our town and its beautiful people.
Water is life, and when they chose profit over ours and our children's lives, WE should be angry and WE should let them know.
Dig out Mobuoy dump immediately and tell us the truth about what is really in our drinking water.............
